SUBJECT: Aerospace Education – MAWG AE Contest Theme


  1. The theme for the 2019 MAWG AE Display Contest is “Science Fair.”  We are looking for teams to select a topic, create a hypothesis, conduct experiment(s), and present results.  


  1. At this time, the AE Display Contest will be for cadets only, but we are investigating the possibility of an additional contest for senior members.

2019 Massachusetts Wing Aerospace Education Display Theme


“Science Fair”



Present an interactive exhibit similar to a science fair.  Teams will select a topic or question, research from at least three sources, state a hypothesis, create and conduct experiment(s) to prove (or disprove) the hypothesis, collect data, and display the data appropriately to support the conclusion.  Displays should include all the elements of the research (question, background research, hypothesis, experimental design, data collected, graphs/displays of data, and conclusions), and may also contain the experiment itself or video or photos of the experiment.


All exhibits should be able to be accommodated on or within the area of two (2) 3x6 foot tables (36 sq ft).



CHARACTERISTICS FOR JUDGING:

An Aerospace Education award will be presented to the Squadron display that is the most meaningful, worthy, and effective.


1. Theme (project addresses assigned theme) – 30 points:

a.  Question, hypothesis – 4 points

b.  Background research – 6 points

c.  Experimental design – 8 points

d.  Data/graphs – 8 points

e.  Conclusions – 4 points

2. Visual (display effectively communicates ideas and concepts:  neatness, accuracy, understandable) – 15 points

3. Substance (project identifies and explores relevant issues) – 15 points

4. Verbal (Cadets’ oral proficiency of the material) – 30 points

5. Design (craftsmanship and creativity of the physical display) – 10 points


SUGGESTIONS AND IDEAS:

  1. Effect on aircraft center of gravity on stability

  2. Effect of friction on speed of an object

  3. Effect of different chemical compounds on the temperature of a planet

  4. Effect of different computer user-interface designs on speed of data entry, errors, etc.
